Description
Guaiac, also known as Lignum vitae, is one of the hardest and most durable woods in the world. It comes from the Caribbean and Central America, where it grows in dry, sunny areas. Thanks to its extraordinary density, high content of natural oils and resins, it is extremely resistant to moisture, wear and salt water.
The wood has a deep brown to olive green color with a fine texture and a characteristic oily sheen. When processed, it emits a delicate, resinous aroma.
Uses
Guaiac was previously used for highly stressed mechanical parts, such as ship shaft bearings, pulleys or heavy machine parts. It was also used to make ship decks.
Today, it is sought after by craftsmen, knifemakers and small object manufacturers who appreciate its exceptional properties and appearance. It is suitable for turned products, tool handles, wood jewelry, pendants or decorative items.
Propieties
- Extremely heavy and hard wood with high density
- Typical green wood – naturally greenish hue that is characteristic of guaiac
- Exceptional resistance to moisture, chemicals, wood-destroying fungi and insects
- Naturally oily surface, can be polished to a high gloss
- More difficult to glue due to high oil content
- Fine resinous smell when processed.
Safety instructions
Tropical woods can be toxic or cause various allergies. During processing, fine wood dust is also generated, which can cause a number of other health problems. Therefore, it is recommended to use respirators and other protective equipment when working with wood.
Other wood materials
You can find other wood for your projects in the Tropical wood or Other wood category.
