Tigerwood
Tigerwood (Astronium graveolens, Astronium fraxinifolium) is an attractive tropical hardwood native to South America, mainly Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and surrounding regions. It gets its name from its distinctive grain pattern reminiscent of tiger stripes, giving it a unique and recognizable appearance.
The heartwood ranges from golden brown to reddish-brown, featuring dark brown to nearly black streaks. Each piece is unique, with its own natural pattern. The sapwood is lighter in color, yellowish to light brown, and is usually clearly separated from the heartwood.
The grain is generally straight, sometimes slightly interlocked or wavy, with a fine to medium texture. Tigerwood has a natural luster, and when finished with oil or wax, its grain and contrast become even more pronounced.
This wood is hard, strong, and highly resistant to wear. It machines well, turns, sands, and polishes nicely, although sharp tools are recommended due to its high density.
In this category, you will find smaller Tigerwood pieces ideal for knife handles, tool handles, turned items, wooden jewelry, and small decorative and craft projects.
