Swiss stone pine
Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) is a high-altitude pine species native primarily to the Alps and Carpathian Mountains. In Alpine countries, it is widely known as Zirbe and, thanks to its ability to thrive in harsh mountain conditions, slow growth and longevity, it is often referred to as the “Queen of the Alps.”
Swiss stone pine wood is lightweight, soft and very easy to work. It typically has a light to yellowish colour, prominent knots and, above all, a distinctive aromatic scent associated with the resins and volatile aromatic compounds naturally present in the wood.
Thanks to its excellent workability, Swiss stone pine is a popular material for woodturning, carving and making small decorative and functional objects. Smaller pieces can be used for figurines, pendants, wooden jewellery, small bowls and boxes, aromatic decorations, ornamental elements and many other small craft projects.
