Turkish Hazel
Turkish Hazel (Corylus colurna) is a deciduous tree native to Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. Unlike the common hazel shrub, it grows as a large tree and provides quality wood suitable for a wide range of woodworking applications.
The wood ranges from light brown to yellowish-brown, sometimes with subtle reddish or olive tones. Without surface treatment, it has a rather understated appearance, but after finishing with oil or wax it develops a warmer, honey-like color.
The grain is fine, even, and without strong contrasts, giving the wood a clean and calm appearance. Growth rings are visible but not distracting, creating a subtle natural figure instead.
The wood is moderately hard, tough, and easy to work with. It cuts, turns, and sands very well, making it a popular material for detailed handcraft work. After finishing with oil or wax, the surface becomes smooth with a pleasant satin-like feel.
An interesting feature of Turkish Hazel is that, unlike the common hazel shrub, it produces significantly more stable and workable wood, which historically made it useful for small-scale craft and household production.
