Description

Wych Elm (Ulmus glabra) wood light brown to grey-brown in colour with a relatively distinct pattern. The structure is usually straight to slightly wavy, with clearly visible pores.

A typical feature of elm wood is the irregular interweaving and in places even crossing of the fibres, which can create an irregular or slightly wavy pattern. Thanks to this structure, the wood is strong, tough and well resistant to mechanical stress and splitting. Therefore, in the past it was often used for, for example, the hubs of wheelbarrows, parts of wagons or for the handles of tools and implements.

When processed, it is easy to cut, mill and turn. It glues and sands well and the surface can be treated with oil, wax and varnish. The surface treatment usually highlights the natural pattern and structure of the wood.

Elm wood is used for turned products, tool and knife handles, small handicrafts, wooden jewellery, decorative items and smaller home accessories.
