Snakewood
Snakewood (Brosimum guianense), also known as snakewood, is a tropical wood native to South America, especially Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela and Brazil. It got its name due to its characteristic pattern resembling snakeskin.
This wood is famous for its very distinctive coloration - dark brown to almost black spots and irregular "scaly" patterns appear on a reddish-brown to orange background. The whole creates the impression of a deep, vivid pattern, and each piece is completely unique.
The structure is fine to very fine, it is among the extremely dense and heavy exotic woods and is among the hardest commercially available woods. It offers considerable resistance when processed and requires perfectly sharp tools and an experienced approach.
Interestingly, Snakewood is prone to small cracks during drying and processing, which makes it a material more suitable for experienced craftsmen. It is this "inflexibility" together with its rarity that significantly contributes to its exclusivity.
After final polishing, it acquires an almost glassy, elegant surface and the pattern appears exceptionally plastic and deep, which is one of its most valued properties.
In this category, you will find Snakewood, suitable primarily for luxury and small projects where detail stands out - especially knife handles, handles, wooden jewelry, inlays, turned miniatures and collector's items.
