Description

Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) has wood that ranges in color from light yellow-brown to slightly pinkish, with a more pronounced growth ring pattern. The sapwood is lighter, whitish to pale yellow, and is usually clearly distinguishable from the heartwood. The grain is mostly straight, with a typical coniferous wood texture.

The wood is relatively strong and flexible, and it retains its shape well after drying. Thanks to its uniform structure, it is easy to work with and suitable for various types of craftsmanship.

During processing, it cuts, mills, and turns well. The surface can be easily sanded and finished with oil, wax, or varnish, which enhance the natural pattern of the growth rings. A subtle sweet scent, typical of Douglas fir, may be noticeable during working.
