Description

Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) is a dark exotic hardwood with a distinctive grain and characteristic darker streaks. The heartwood ranges from brown to purplish brown, while the sapwood is lighter, yellowish to pale.

The wood is dense, strong, and durable, making it suitable for precise craftsmanship. It cuts, turns, sands, and polishes well, although the use of high-quality sharp tools is recommended.

When finished with oil or wax, the contrast of the grain is enhanced, the color becomes richer, and the surface gains a natural luster.

Indian Rosewood has long been used in more demanding applications, such as the production of musical instruments (especially guitars), where it is valued for its stability and acoustic properties.

Indian Rosewood is an ideal choice for:

  • knife handles
  • tool handles
  • turned items
  • wooden jewelry
  • musical instruments
  • decorative objects
  • premium wooden accessories

Each piece is unique, with its own grain pattern, color tone, and structure.

CITES Information

Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) is listed under the CITES convention, which regulates international trade in endangered species of flora and fauna in order to protect natural resources and prevent illegal logging.

All offered wood comes from legal sources and complies with current regulations for trade within the European Union.

About the Dalbergia Genus

The genus Dalbergia includes a group of tropical hardwoods commonly known as rosewoods. These woods are valued for their high density, durability, distinctive grain, and often rich, dark coloration.

Due to long-term high demand and overexploitation, most Dalbergia species are now protected under the CITES convention. Their use today is therefore closely linked to legal sourcing and responsible, sustainable trade.

Safety Notice

Some tropical woods may cause allergic reactions or irritation when being worked. Fine wood dust is produced during processing and may be harmful if inhaled.

We therefore recommend using appropriate protective equipment, especially a respirator and eye protection, and ensuring adequate ventilation of the workspace.

You can find other wood for your projects in the Tropical wood or Other wood category.
