Description

Linden (Tilia sp.) is a soft hardwood with a fine and uniform texture that is easy to work with. Its subtle grain, smooth structure, and excellent workability make it one of the most popular woods for carving and detailed handcraft work.

The wood is light in color, ranging from pale white to creamy beige, sometimes with a slight yellowish tint. The surface appears clean and calm, without strong contrasts or prominent grain patterns.

Linden is lightweight, relatively stable, and works well with both hand and machine tools. It planes, turns, and sands easily, while its fine and even texture allows clean processing of delicate details with minimal fiber tear-out.

When ripping on a circular saw, linden may have a tendency to bind against the blade due to its fine and fibrous structure. For smoother cutting, a suitable blade with fewer teeth is recommended.

The offered wood comes from European linden species, most commonly Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata) and Large-leaved Lime (Tilia platyphyllos). Both species share similar characteristics and are traditionally valued for carving, woodturning, and fine handcraft work.

Linden wood is commonly used for:

  • wood carving
  • turned objects
  • wooden jewelry
  • model making
  • decorative items
  • small handcrafted products

For centuries, linden has been a preferred material for religious carvings, sculptures, and ornamental work. Its fine texture allows precise shaping and clean detailing even in very delicate areas.
